Let’s Talk About Crude

I’m super happy to be writing this, because it means after months upon months of creating and retooling, we’re ready to talk about Crude.

Hi!  I’m Jessica.

And this is Eric.

Together and apart, we’ve been making things for as long as I can recall.  Books, t-shirts, websites, movies, programs, paintings, photos, origami, sweaters, and great food.  We like to experiment and play with our hands.

Last year I started developing a body scrub, with ingredients that kept my Aunt Carrie’s ninety-year-old face feeling as smooth as a baby’s cheek.  I was surprised when Eric was suddenly addicted to it.  And then when our friends were.  We started to call it “Crude” since it was unrefined and dark as black gold.  (Eric’s from Oklahoma.)

We did months of work, series after series of test batches, switching up the recipe ever so slightly, but something just didn’t feel right to me.  I didn’t care about the scrub because, well, I’m just not a scrub user.  For all the lovely results in the world, I couldn’t get past the ridiculous mess in the shower.

We were dismayed.  Our product had unraveled before our eyes.  But as we were cleaning things up in the test kitchen one afternoon, I tried out something new on the double-boiler.  I scribbled down some ideas, measured things as carefully as I can (culinary school turned me into a recalcitrantly unprecise cook), and discovered the most delicious blend of silkiness.

A few hours later, we had discovered the real surprise: I had a perfect recipe for the thing we use most in this house.  And if nothing else, I’d never have to go looking for a replacement lip treatment again.

Silky smooth, but strong.  Delicious scents, but not overpowering.  Healthful, but not prissy.  You know you want to try it.
